More Cost Cutting Measures
Filed under: View All Articles, News Stories, ==Features==
Posted by: Jill @ 8:34 am

The United Methodist Children’s Home is working very hard to cut administrative costs wherever we can. The economy is affecting this ministry as it is all non-profits, so we are trying to find ways to reduce our costs and minimize the impact to the ministry to children.

In the past, we have accepted ’standing orders’ from churches, Sunday school classes, and other church groups, for various quantities of publications and promotional materials. For example, a Sunday school class may have asked us to always send them 100 newsletters to them everytime we publish a new one.

Since we don’t have a way to be sure these requests are current, we will no longer be shipping out standing orders - we will only send orders as they are placed. We apologize for any inconvenience, but we believe this will help us eliminate any possible waste.

Please know that we will still send any quantities of any available materials to anyone upon request. If you were receiving a standing order shipment of any UMCH materials, please call us and order what you need when you need them. (Please help us further by passing this message along to all Sunday school classes, UMW & UMM groups, children & youth ministers, etc.)

Filling orders upon request will also help us always know who is helping promote and advocate for our ministry … and allow us to thank you every time! Your continued support of the United Methodist Children’s Home is so important; especially now.

Call us if you have any questions, and thank you so much for your gifts, your prayers and your service.

May God continue to bless each of you as you bless His children.

awardsday (64)

Saturday, June 13th was Awards Day for the children at the United Methodist Children’s Home. Young people from our Scottsboro, Florence, Tuscaloosa, Mobile, Selma and Headland homes gathered in the fellowship hall at Frazer Memorial United Methodist Church in Montgomery, AL to celebrate their achievements. The event was sponsored by the Grace Bellis Foundation of The United Methodist Men’s Club at St. Andrews United Methodist Church in Panama City, Florida.

The ceremony began at 10:30am with a prayer and opening remarks by our Chaplain Rev. Luanne Houser. Afterwards, Steve Hubbard UMCH’s President & CEO congratulated the residents on their achievements and encouraged them to embrace education as a platform for success. Mr. Milton Burke was the key note speaker. He asked the young people to really think about setting goals for themselves and working hard to meet them.

Mr. Burke encouraged everyone in attendance to, “Learn from your mistakes, learn from what you do well, learn about your passions, figure out why you believe what you believe. Everyone is responsible to learn, lead, and succeed.”

That afternoon Mr. Burke and his assistant gave away 45 awards to deserving children from all our residential care centers. Awards were given for excellence in the areas of academics, music, visual art, sportsmanship, and personal character. The Scottsboro home took home the most awards and was thus given the title of Best All-Around Home

Every child who received an award couldn’t help but beam with pride.  One boy who didn’t receive any awards this year pointed to the list of awards and said, “Next year I’m going to win this one, and this one, and this one, you just wait and see.”

Thank you St. Andrew’s UMC, you truly inspire our young people to work hard and do their best!

The delegates attending the North Alabama Annual Conference did not hesitate when asked to write a few words of encouragement to the children of the United Methodist Children’s Home.

These blessings will be forwarded to the kids so they know all of the United Methodists who are thinking of them. Here are just a few of these special notes.

God loves you! Always remember that you are special to God! You are important!

We at Carpenter UMC are praying for you.

Always know that God loves you!

God loves you!

God’s special blessings are hoped and prayed for you!

You are a precious child of God. He loves you more than you will ever know. Cling to Him and His Word.

For the happiest life…draw close to God. He will show you JOY and LOVE and help you know His purpose for you.

A child’s faith can lead adults to Christ because children are open and honest. As you grow, keep your honesty and openness.

U.R. a special person who will do wonderful things in this Life if you stay in God’s Love.

Let God give you dreams. He will help those dreams come true. I pray love for you!

Never give up and always keep your head up. Pray for people who you don’t know and you will be blessed. I will be praying for you.

As you go through life, always remember there is life in Jesus.

Jesus loves the little children. Smile and be happy!

Thanks for the art calendar. Keep drawing and painting.

May God bless you all and good luck in everything you do!!

Happy summer! God bless you all! I am praying for you all!

Be sure to read a book this summer!

Be all that God wants you to be!

Jesus loves you and so do I. Stay faithful to Him and He will direct your path.

An angel touches the children and staff at UMCH’s Florence Group Home

Each Monday morning the phone rings. The voice on the line asks what you need for the week. That phone call comes each week from “our angel” in Florence, Alabama.

This anonymous angel never gives his name, but calls the Florence Group Home every Monday morning asking what they need for the week. He then shows up with bags of groceries for the boys at the home.

We thank our anonymous angel for his support and love of the home. We also thank all the anonymous angels who have contributed in some way to the United Methodist Children’s Home.

2009 Softball Tournament (84)

It was the perfect spring day, sunny, breezy and tournament-ready on Saturday at the Al Trione Sportsplex in Daphne, AL. After District Superintendent Fred Outlaw opened the day with a prayer, tournament organizer Tony Caminiti explained the rules and gave teams specific directions.  Then the real competition began. Six United Methodist men’s teams from churches in southern Alabama and western Florida gathered together to battle it out for the coveted first place trophy.

Each team played five back-to-back games spanning from 9am to almost 5pm. By the time the last game rolled around more than a few players had aching muscles and joints. At the end of the day Daphne United Methodist Church took the first place trophy like a group of war-weary but joyful soldiers. Niceville United Methodist Church earned the second place trophy and Montgomery First United Methodist slid into third place.

There was a tremendous outpouring of generosity at the tournament as a local business dropped by to make a donation to the Children’s Home. Even the ASA referees officiating the games donated part of their fees to help our children. All proceeds from the tournament including entry fees, concessions, and t-shirt sales will go to directly benefit the United Methodist Children’s Home. We want to extend a big thank you to Tony, and all of the volunteers and participants in this year’s softball tournament! Your gifts will help our children more than you will ever know.
